What do the kidneys do in the body? The kidneys are an amazing organ that has a lot of functions in the body to help keep us alive and doing well. Apart from concentrating urine, kidneys also act as a filtering mechanism to both balance electrolytes and to remove waste products from the blood stream. The kidneys also produce several hormones to maintain the body’s balance including one which stimulates the bone marrow to make red cells (this hormone is called erythropoietin).
